Microsoft clinches Skype Acquisition deal

Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype has just been finalized, a little more than five months after it was first announced. Under the $8.5 billion deal, Skype CEO Tony Bates will be named president of the new Skype Division of Microsoft, and will have to report directly to Steve Ballmer. This news is close on the heels after the deal between Google and Facebook was rumoured. The cost of acquisition was put at a whopping $ 8.56 billion for a company which posted last annual operating profit of $ 269 million.
Investors were initially skeptical why Microsoft is mulling for this VOIP company when it already has a wider reaching Windows Live Messenger which is very closely related to the working of Skype, though in a crude way. Moreover the user base of Skype is just a third of the user base of Live Messenger. The key difference though is, Skype’s 8 million users are actually Paying for the service. In fact there were talks between Google, Facebook and Skype on a tie-up this May which should have rang the bell in Steve Ballmer’s Office.
But its hard to see if $ 8 billion is worth the bait for Skype and we need to wait and see if Microsoft benefits from Skype’s users and can convert its vast user base to pay for its internet-telephony services.
